Two words…ROAD TRIP. That is my ideal adventure that I wish I could do weekly. However life just really seems to get into the way. But recently, I went on a road trip to my new home, where I had to travel for 6 plus hours, and I sure appreciated the healthy snacks for on the go that I brought!
Long drives sure aren’t an easy thing to eat well through. When you think of road trips, you think of fast food, junk food, etc…well when you are on a diet plan to get the gains, you don’t typically eat those foods as much. So I had to get to thinkin’!
I say reasonably healthy because we can’t be perfect all the time, if you know what I’m saying. Finding reasonably healthy snacks for on the go can be difficult. I find it nice to have some suggestions from people that have done it a time or two.
What helped me was asking internet friends and compiling a list of items I enjoyed! Through this article, I am going to give you my top fave healthy snacks for on the go that helped me make it through my recent long hauls!!

Sunflower Seeds
While some may think this is an unhealthy snack due to the massive amount of salt…I find it to actually be quite beneficial. Now I don’t necessarily agree that we need all that salt, but would you rather fall asleep at the wheel more??
There is an obvious answer to that one. While trying to be morbidly funny, also poses some truth. I found it very helpful, more than anything, to eat sunflower seeds to stay awake.
While the nutrition benefits are fairly low, they are much better to eat then crushing several bags of hard, sugary candies. Another pro is that you tend to crush your water intake. This can pose a threat as far as stopping more times than you would prefer to tinkle, but c’mon….benefits lol

Apples and Peanut Butter
While eating an apple is really easy for some people, I STRUGGLE. Only because I have had a gum graft for my front teeth, and I am really not supposed to chomp into apples like normal people.
So I typically eat this healthy snack when I am at a rest stop. I bring along my apple slicer and dunk away into the oh so yummy nut butter. While this is a heart-friendly snack, providing your hot body with natural sugars does the trick in more ways than one! A perfectly ideal healthy snack for on the go, especially in my book.

Rice Cakes
*Huge mess alert* Warning! Warning! I made a huge a** mess with these. This is one of my favorite cardboard treats to munch on, but boy they sure are messy.
When at home, I eat these with peanut butter or protein butter for the extra kick in my sweet tooth pants! I found these healthy ones at Trader Joe’s!
Protein Shakes
If you are into fitness at all, you know a good protein shake when you see one. I have had the pleasure of discovering the PeSience brand and 1st Phorm’s shake as well. My current flavor for 1st Phorm is the chocolate mint cookie, and my favorite PeScience flavor is cake pop!
Which one is my favorite brand? Ahh well, I can’t say because they both do wonders for my taste buds. But protein shakes have helped with my travels on more than one occasion. For one, they fill me up for a while. And two, they are easy to come by, especially on the go!
Bananas
You can overload your body with too much potassium (really only from supplementation, not from food [source])…but this is such an easy snack! I love traveling and eating bananas. I am not sure why, but they just seem to go together.
I know we aren’t supposed to throw our banana peels out the window…BUT! I find it a good source for the earth since it is biodegradable. The point of this is, that I hate it when the peel stinks up the car…small negative for me hehe, but still worth it.

Tuna Packets
These are a little bit trickier to eat, but such a beneficial healthy snack for on the go. Probably another rest stop snack, but if you are talented at multitasking, then you can eat these on the go.
I LOVE tuna packets. My favorite flavor is hot buffalo, mainly because of the spice, duh. But there are plenty of delish flavors, like this herb and garlic. Protein ranging from 15-17g per packet is a huge win to me.

I’ve literally never eaten well on a road trip. It’s always an excuse to binge eat junk food but I need to make an effort to do better. Once we arrive at our destination it’s usually back on track and sticking to a good routine and schedule – which includes eating well and exercising. Next time we go though I’m totally taking a jar of PB and apples and rice cakes. So easy and so delicious!!

Samantha,
Thanks for reading!! Yesss I have been there more times than I care to admit. Honestly, I can’t blame anyone because when you go on the road, it’s all about fun and junk food. But this has been the first time I have taken serious responsibility in watching what I eat and it helped for sure!!
