I swear I had been hearing about Built Bars everywhere! But I never trust good marketing alone, I had to try them for myself. So Mary & I went all in & each bought the full variety 18-pack of their top 9 flavors, to get an idea of what all the hype is about. We’re trying all of the most popular Built Bar flavors – so you don’t have to! Let’s get right into our full (honest) Built Bar review…
Built Bar Review: 1. Are they healthy?
First of all, let’s chat about the most important questions: 1. Are Built Bars healthy? & 2. Do they taste good?
I’ll get into #2 in-depth in the review below, but first I wanted to go over some nutrition facts.
Built Bars have between 130-180 calories per bar, depending on what flavor you get. They all pack in 16-19 g protein per bar. The average (sedentary) person needs between 46 g (women) & 56 g (men) of protein a day (1). But it varies a lot based on weight, activity level, etc., so I would recommend calculating your own needs.
According to the DRI (Dietary Reference Intake):
[0.36 g protein] x [pound of body weight] = daily protein intake (1)
You also have to take into account your ratio of fat to muscle, how much you exercise, etc. So honestly, I would base the amount of protein on how you feel instead of just trusting online calculations.
Anyways, back to the Built Bar nutrition information. Each Built Bar has between 4-5 g of sugar, which is pretty low compared to some alternatives. They have 6 g fiber per bar as well.

Even though we have a code, these are still all our 100% honest opinions. We don’t believe in representing anything we aren’t genuinely in love with, so if any of these flavors stink, we’ll be the first to let you know.
We both bought the mixed box to try out a bunch of flavors, but you can buy the flavors individually as well. It’s up to your personal preference!
I’m going to break down the texture, taste, and satiety factor of the top 9 Built Bar flavors. Let’s get into it!

Coconut Almond
Oh my goodness… I knew I was going to love this flavor because I love anything coconut, but they blew my mind! These ones literally taste like an almond joy (just slightly healthier.)
This is one of my favorite flavors, if not my overall favorite. I could eat these all day.
The texture is so good and chewy. Most protein bars I’ve had in the past have been chalky and gross, so I don’t know how they do it. But these ones are incredible.
These really do keep you full too… It’s not one of those weak protein bars that keeps you full for 5 minutes & then you’re hungry again. I think the almonds in there give it a little extra satiety boost as well!
Rating: 9.5/10
Mint Brownie
If you put a protein bar into a blender with a Thin Mint… This is what you’d get. So yummy!
I’m a big mint chocolate fan, so this one was really good for me. If you aren’t a big mint gal/guy, I wouldn’t recommend this one because the mint flavor is pretty strong.
The texture is great, just like the others. Chewy and delicious. Not chalky at all.
Satiety is the same, as well. These guys really keep you full. For the rest of the flavors, I’m going to focus on just the flavor. Because from what I can tell, they’re all going to have a chewy texture and keep you full for a while.
However, if I see any differences in either of those categories in the other bars, I will definitely let you know!
Rating: 8.5/10
Cookies & Cream
These were so dang disappointing. I love a cookies ‘n cream protein bar (or cookies ‘n cream anything for that matter) & these were a big miss. First of all, they taste nothing like cookies ‘n cream in my opinion.
When I bite into a cookies ‘n cream flavored (anything), I’m expecting some cookie chunks. This had the same texture as all the other bars. Which has been great in most of the bars, but not when you’re biting into it expecting the taste/crunch of Oreo’s.
This has been the worst one for me so far. I feel part of the problem was that my expectations were really high for this one, but it just missed the mark.
Rating: 4/10
Coconut
I would give this basically the exact same review as the coconut almond, just minus the almonds. It’s still really freaking good and tastes like a Mounds bar.
Personal preference, I like the coconut almond more. I think it has a better texture with a little crunch added from the almonds.
However, they’re both excellent choices if you like coconut.
Rating: 9/10
Peanut Butter Brownie
Okay… I thought the coconut ones were perfection but honestly this is right up there with them! Especially heated up in the microwave for 15 seconds, it honestly tastes like a peanut butter brownie. And I don’t usually say that about protein bars or other bars that are “supposed to” taste like a certain dessert. But with these ones, they seriously do.
They also have real peanuts added in which gives it a little salty crunch, which I love! Honestly just protein bar perfection.
I think I rated them a 9.5 when I first tried them in the video, but after buying a box of just this flavor and eating a bunch more, I’m raising my rating to a 10. They’re just that dang good and actually get better the more you eat them!
Rating: 10/10
Raspberry
Oooooh dang this one was good. It tastes like a raspberry truffle, but in a more chewy, protein bar-like way. The dark chocolate coating pairs so well with the raspberry flavor, I could eat this one again & again.
Rating: 8/10
Double Chocolate
I’m not going to lie to you guys… (I told you this Built Bar review was going to be *brutally* honest.) I’m a big chocolate gal & was really excited for these ones. I’d seen other people putting these in the microwave and saying they tasted like chocolate cake, so needless to say I was AMPED.
But the sad reality is that they smelled and tasted a little like dog food. I can’t explain it, but as soon as I got this bar out of the microwave and was ready to bite into it, I was overwhelmed with the scent of dog food. I don’t know if it actually tasted like it or not (I’ve never tried dog food…) but the smell alone made it seem like it tasted like it too.
I am so sad I didn’t like these ones and am not trying to bash them. They did have some redeeming qualities and I finished both of the bars in the box, so they obviously weren’t that bad. But to be honest with you, I would never buy these ones again.
Try them for yourself before judging. I could just have hypersensitive taste buds/ nostrils that picked out a scent of dog food that wasn’t really there. Who knows? You can see both Mary’s & my opinions in the video as well if you need a second opinion.
Rating: 4/10
Salted Caramel
These ones were pretty good, but not my favorite. I think I rated them an 8/10 in the video the first time I tried them, but I’m going to bump these down to a 7/10.
Honestly, it’s just my personal preference, and I never craved them again after trying them the first time. (As opposed to the peanut butter brownie/ coconut almond which I crave constantly.
These ones are pretty good though. If you’re a big salted caramel fan, you will probably like them more than I did! They just didn’t have enough of the salty/sweet combo for me.
Rating: 7/10
Cherry Barcia
Pleasantly surprised with this one! I didn’t know what to expect out of a cherry protein bar but this one is a blessing.
I went through a phase of being obsessed with chocolate-covered cherries as a kid and that’s what this reminds me of. V nostalgic, I’m a fan.
Like many of the other flavors, this tastes like a candy bar and I’m constantly in shock that it’s healthy & packed with 17 grams of protein.
If you’re a chocolate covered cherry lover – you’ll love these ones!
Rating: 8/10
In Conclusion…
The main takeaway from this Built Bar review is that these are some of the best protein bars I’ve ever had (SOME of the flavors.) But for some reason, some of the flavors were just a big miss. (I’m looking at you, double chocolate…)
I would absolutely recommend all of the flavors that I rated an 8/10 or higher though. Seriously, the texture/chewiness is perfection and a lot of these actually taste like the dessert they’re portraying.
If you’re new to Built Bar and are still unsure on what to try, I have recommendations. If you like coconut, absolutely try the coconut almond or regular coconut. They’re both phenomenal. If you like peanut butter (who doesn’t?) – go with the peanut butter brownie. If you’re a big mint chocolate gal/guy, check out the mint brownie. If you’re more of a fruity/chocolatey person, you can’t go wrong with the raspberry or cherry barcia.
In my personal opinion, I will never buy the double chocolate or cookies & cream again. They just weren’t for me. But who knows, you may like them! I’ve heard positive reviews from other people on those flavors, so even though I didn’t personally like them, other people do.
If it’s your first time buying, I would highly recommend getting the mixed box (like we did) so you can try out a bunch of flavors and see what your personal favorites are. Plus, there’s only 2 of each flavor in the box, so if you don’t like one, you can easily give the second bar to someone else (and not waste your money!)
