If you’ve been on Instagram these past few months, you’ve definitely seen an ad for Misfits protein bars. The brightly colored aesthetic packaging is sure to catch your eye as you’re scrolling through your feed. These colorful plant-based protein bars graced my feed at least 100+ times. *The Instagram algorithm is truly out to get my money.* So I decided to try them out and see if they’re as good as they look! I’ll be sharing my brutally honest opinions with y’all in this review. Let’s get into it!
*Brutally Honest* Misfits Protein Bars Review
Plant-based protein bars can be hit or miss, so I didn’t know what to expect from these. Previous vegan protein bars I’ve tried have either been gritty, tasted like cardboard, had no flavor at all, or (if I’m lucky) been surprisingly delicious.
I went into these Misfits protein bars with low expectations, but high hopes. I’ll share all of my honest thoughts with you guys throughout this review.
The flavors I tried were:
- Chocolate Banoffee
- Cookie Butter
- Dark Chocolate Brownie
- Chocolate Caramel
- Cookies and Cream
- Chocolate Hazelnut

How Are Misfits Sweetened?
After a quick Google search, I found out that Misfits are sweetened with Steviol Glycosides (from the Stevia plant). This sweetener is labeled as safe by the FDA.
However, I’ve never personally had a good experience with Stevia-sweetened foods.
Generally, if I eat foods containing Stevia, I’ll get bloated and have other digestive issues. I’ve learned to avoid these types of foods/drinks because they don’t sit well with me.
I also don’t love the taste of Stevia, and if I can blatantly taste it in a food/drink, I’m probably not going to enjoy it.
Plenty of my friends love foods sweetened with Stevia though, so it’s all up to personal preference. I’m still going into the Misfits bars with an open mindset and hoping the Stevia flavor isn’t overpowering.
Flavor Breakdown
For the full flavor breakdown, be sure to watch my video review. But I’ll give a quick TL/DR here.
- Chocolate Banoffee: Still unsure what the “offee” in this flavor is supposed to be – toffee? coffee? The world may never know. I didn’t taste either, so it could be something else entirely. The banana flavor in this is strong though, and pretty good! However, it’s very dry and the texture is like cardboard. It sucks the moisture out of your mouth.
- Cookie Butter: I thought this one was going to be SO GOOD. I mean, cookie butter… How can you mess that up?? Well, I’ve been proven wrong. This was one of the worst flavors and it tasted nothing like cookie butter. Not only was the texture similar to cardboard, but the taste was too. Have I ever tasted cardboard? No. But I can only imagine it’d taste like this protein bar. The layer of cookie butter was so thin too, it added nothing to the bar. The milk chocolate coating was good though!
- Dark Chocolate Brownie: This was very okay. I generally love chocolate-flavored anything, so I had the highest hopes for this one. But it tastes strongly like Stevia and it was impossible to get past that to the actual chocolate flavor.
- Chocolate Caramel: This bar had a thin layer of caramel on top and a milk chocolate coating. Pretty tasty! You could really taste the caramel and chocolate flavors and the Stevia wasn’t overpowering. It was still dry/gritty but didn’t seem as bad as the others.
- Cookies and Cream: This was the only bar I tried that had a white chocolate coating. I expected it to taste similar to a Hershey’s cookies and cream bar (in protein bar form). Holy shit… This bar was SO bad. The only thing I could taste was Stevia. Absolutely no cookies and cream flavor. Never again.
- Chocolate Hazelnut: This one had a milk chocolate coating and a layer of hazelnut filling. It was actually pretty good! It had little chocolate chips inside and actually tasted like chocolate, not Stevia. This was definitely one of my favorites. Still super dry though. But the gooey hazelnut layer made up for it a bit!
Misfits Protein Bars Texture/Dryness
After trying all 6 of the flavors I bought, I can tell you that these are 100% the driest protein bars I’ve ever eaten. The main words I’d describe these with are 1. dry 2. gritty, and 3. powdery. The main thing that comes to mind when biting into them is cardboard.
Throughout trying the 6 bars in my taste test, I was constantly chugging water. The protein bars dried out my mouth every time I took a bite. I kept coughing because they’d get stuck in my throat. Dramatic? Maybe. But I’ve never had to edit so many coughing takes out of a video, as I did with this taste test.
These are the worst textured protein bars I’ve ever had (vegan or non-vegan). I could only take a bite or two into each one and couldn’t get any further. Honestly, I was tempted to spit it out.
Would I buy these again?
No, absolutely not. A few of the flavors (chocolate hazelnut & chocolate caramel) were decent. But the vast majority of them were awful. I couldn’t even finish a full bar with most of the flavors. Even when I was really hungry. That’s saying something.
The strong Stevia taste and dry texture were the main issues with these bars. If they seriously improved the texture (maybe use a different protein powder?) and used a different sweetener, they could be better. The flavors themselves had potential, but the texture and Stevia ruined them.
If you’re in the market for a good plant-based protein bar, try the good! snacks vegan protein bars from Amazon. I’ve been ordering these for years and absolutely love them. They’re the best vegan protein bars I’ve found. The texture is really great for a vegan protein bar, and the flavors are to die for. My favorites are the birthday cake and cookie dough!
For whey protein bars, I always recommend Built Bars or Built Puffs. I have these stocked up in my pantry at all times. They have so many delicious flavors to choose from and taste like a candy bar! We have a discount code too (VITALITYVIXENS for 10% off). Check them out here.
