I’ve been wanting to try out Free People’s activewear line ever since it launched. They have some really cute pieces and I needed to see if they were actually functional, as well as aesthetic! In this Free People Movement review, I’ll share my honest opinions on the Happiness Runs Crop Tank and The Way Home Shorts.
Free People Movement Review (FP Movement)
Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I heard Free People had come out with an activewear line. Free People’s clothes are typically really cute, but can often not fit right (for me, anyway), and are pretty expensive.
The only way to test out my skepticism was, of course, to buy some pieces to try for myself!
After trying on these pieces, I immediately knew I liked the crop tops, but hated the shorts. I ended up returning the shorts and will get into more detail on why below.
The crop tops, however, are so cute and comfy! I had a few concerns, which I’ll go over, but overall they were everything I was hoping they’d be.
Happiness Runs Crop Tank
Mary recommended these crop tops to me the last time she came to visit Tampa! She brought one with her and it was so cute. She told me it was from the Free People Movement line and was super stretchy and comfortable.
What sold me was when she said it could be worn with or without a bra. I absolutely love that it’s designed that way, but of course, needed to test it out to make sure that claim was legit.
I bought the Washed Grey and Stone Eagle (a sandy beige color).
Stone Eagle:
Since the stone eagle is such a light color, I was skeptical on whether or not you could actually get away with going braless.
Turns out, you can (for the most part). It’s not complete coverage, but it’s enough to walk around comfortably without a bra.
However, if I’m going to workout or be active in any way, I’ll definitely put a bra on under this one.
The back is cute and has a subtle FP movement logo at the top.
The ribbed texture is a really nice touch as well, and in my opinion, makes these look less like activewear and more like a regular crop top! I’ve been wearing mine both ways, they’re very versatile.
I absolutely LOVE the washed gray color. It’s faded the perfect amount and such an appealing color.
Washed Gray:
Happiness Runs Crop Tank – Free People Movement Review:
Overall, the tops are SO cute! The ribbed fabric is actually really soft and comfortable. There’s a ton of stretch but still enough compression that everything is hugged in.
These tanks are designed to be worn with or without a bra. I love that it’s designed for that and feel comfortable not wearing a bra for any light movement. You definitely don’t get any support (there’s no built-in bra) so while you’re covered well enough to not necessarily wear a bra, these tops aren’t meant for any medium to high-impact exercise. I wouldn’t even consider wearing them to lift, run, etc., without a sports bra underneath.
I’ve worn them on light walks and to go out and about, but that’s as much activity as I’d do in these. I tried to lightly jog at one point and will never do that again. There’s absolutely no support.
They come in a TON of colors as well. Looking at the website, there are 30+ colors to choose from. I wanted neutral tanks since I already have a bunch of colorful ones, so I bought the Washed Grey and Stone Eagle (a sandy beige color). They’re both gorgeous in person and look just as I expected from the website pictures.
Sizing:
I wish these came in more size options instead of “XS/S”, “M/L”, “L/XL”. This isn’t a lot of options and doesn’t allow a lot of people to get the size they need.
I’m normally a Small in tops so I bought the XS/S. It surprisingly fits very well because it has a lot of stretch. When I first tried it on, I was thinking it could be a little larger. But after wearing it a few times, it actually stretches quite nicely after you move around a bit.
It’d still be nice if they added more sizes though, since having only 3 size options is extremely low.
The Way Home Shorts
I bought The Way Hom Shorts too because I’ve been on the lookout for a comfy pair of shorts! These are in the color Deep Sea (navy).
Generally, I love wearing spandex shorts to work out. But to go on walks or lounge around, I prefer loose shorts. These shorts are really cute, but way too short in my opinion. My butt was falling out the back, and if I moved/bent over at all, it was game over. If these were 2-3 inches longer, they’d be perfect. But I ended up returning them because I simply couldn’t move or bend.
For workout shorts, function/comfort is more important than aesthetics. These were very cute, but not at all functional, and not very comfy either.
Free People Movement Review
I’d like to try out a few more pieces from FP Movement. I honestly could buy these tops in every color, but was disappointed in the shorts.
Hopefully, this review helped to narrow down your options if you’re looking to buy anything from this brand!
