For our full Smart Sweets review, we both bought this variety pack from Amazon. It didn’t include the sour melon bites or Red Twists, which we bought from Target/Kroger to try.
The flavors we tried for this review include:
- Sweet Fish
- Sour Melon Bites
- Peach Rings
- Sour Blast Buddies
- Sweet Chews
- Fruity Gummy Bears
- Sour Gummy Bears
- Red Twists
Let’s gooo!
If you’d rather watch the video version, we did the full Smart Sweets review on YouTube too! We did a full taste test of every candy & honestly went into a little bit more detail. Check it out below 👇🏼 & be sure to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE to our Youtube channel. 🖤 We honestly appreciate it so much!
Sweet Fish
Sweet – Sour Scale
Sweet, but not too sweet.
texture
Very chewy. These took a while to get through, but so do regular Swedish Fish so it’s to be expected…
similarity to Swedish fish
I (Erin) thought they were very similar, but Mary didn’t think they were as much so. The flavor was slightly different and less sweet, but other than that, they were very similar.
overall rating
9/10
Sour Melon Bites
Sweet – Sour Scale
In the middle. Not very sour, not very sweet. Very meh.
texture
Pretty dang chewy, but not as bad as some of the others. Took about 20 seconds to get through one bite.
similarity to Sour Patch Watermelons
Not similar at all, in my humble (sour patch watermelon addict) opinion. They did taste very watermelon-y (that’s a word now…) But just didn’t compare to Sour Patch Watermelons.
overall rating
5/10
Peach Rings
Sweet – Sour Scale
Sweet, but not too sweet. Really great peach flavor.
texture
Perfectly chewy/gummy and yummy. Didn’t get stuck in our teeth too much.
similarity to Trolli Peachie-o’s
We were both actually really impressed with these. They’re surprisingly similar to Peachie-O’s, which is a huge accomplishment in itself. I would buy these again & again.
overall rating
9.5/10
Sour Blast Buddies
Sweet – Sour Scale
Honestly not sour at all. Fairly sweet but not overpowering.
texture
Not as chewy/rubbery as some of the others. Pretty easy to chew.
similarity to Sour Patch Kids
They’re similar but I would be able to tell the difference in a blind taste test. Sour Patch Kids are definitely more sour.
overall rating
7/10
Sweet Chews
Sweet – Sour Scale
Sweet, but not overpowering. VERY fruity.
texture
So. Dang. CHEWY. Sensing a theme here?? In this case though, Starbursts are typically a pretty chewy candy. So I was not surprised by the chewiness factor.
similarity to Starbursts
I wouldn’t say these were very similar to Starbursts at all, if I’m being honest. They were more similar to the texture of Laffy Taffy. Which, I’m not complaining, it was just unexpected.
overall rating
7.5/10
Fruity Gummy Bears
Sweet – Sour Scale
Sweet. 0% sour.
texture
Pretty dang chewy/gummy… Takes a while to get through a bite.
similarity to Haribo gummy bears
Fairly similar, but not quite as sweet. A little more hard to chew.
overall rating
6/10 (Mary) & 7/10 (Erin)
Sour Gummy Bears
Sweet – Sour Scale
More sour than the other “sour” candies, but still sweet at the end.
texture
A little more hard/chewy than regular gummy bears.
similarity to regular sour gummy bears
Pretty comparable. A little more hard & chewy, but the flavors are similar.
overall rating
7.5/10 (Erin)
Red Twists
Sweet – Sour Scale
Slightly sweet, but oddly bitter at the same time.
texture
Surprisingly soft. Not too chewy at all.
similarity to Twizzlers
More similar to the pull-apart Twizzlers or Red Twists.
overall rating
2/10
Our Favorite & Least Favorite Flavors
Favorites: The best flavors were the sweet fish (Erin’s opinion) and peach rings (Erin & Mary’s opinion), by far. I would buy these again & again. Honestly, most of these candies I could eat a few and then put them away for later. With the sweet fish and peach rings, there was no way not to eat the whole bag, they’re too dang good! So the fact that these bags only have 3g of sugar is definitely a plus. 😉
Least favorites: For the worst flavors, we had different opinions. In my opinion (Erin), it was the sour melon bites. I had such high expectations for these because of my *obsession* with Sour Patch Watermelons, but they seriously disappointed. They weren’t sour at all, but also weren’t really sweet? Not a good combination. But I still ate the whole bag, so were they really that bad? You’ll have to test them out for yourself…
I didn’t try the red twists, but Mary did, and she felt that they were the worst flavor. Again, you’ll have to try them for yourself to form your own opinion. But for us, the red twists & sour melon bites were the worst of the bunch.

Oh! This is awesome. I’ve gotten very into Haribos but they very much aren’t good for me LOL. I’ve tried the smart sweets – just one flavour and it wasn’t either of your top picks – totally going to give those a try now. Thank you! xoxo
